Dear Santa

Dear Santa,

The kids are in the other room writing their letters to you, and I thought while they’re at it, I might as well throw in a few suggestions too. Because Santa, sometimes moms and dads need some fun surprises under the tree, you know? And I just happen to have the perfect recommendations for what those ‘surprises’ ought to be. Don’t take it personally if you didn’t think of these yourself that’s what moms are here for!

I know you are busy, so I will get right to it. Here are some things I would love to find in my stocking:

There’s this Alberta-based, family-owned company called Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts (CRMR), and CRMR offers gift certificates, which can be used at any of their gorgeous boutique lodges: Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff, Deer Lodge in Lake Louise, or Emerald Lake Lodge in Field, British Columbia. Or, if it turns out to be too tough to get an overnight babysitter (kids are welcome, but imagine if we could get away just the two of us!) we can also use those gift certificates at one of CRMR’s fabulous Calgary restaurants: Divino, Cilantro, The Lake House, or Bar C (each one is perfect for us, depending on our mood) These gift certificates would fit just right in my stocking. (Any one of the $25, $50 or $100 denomination gift certificates would be much appreciated, of course.)

If you’re feeling ambitious, Santa, you could also gift us a ‘Ski and Stay’ holiday at Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff or Deer Lodge in Lake Louise. As a busy family, we’d love to know all the details were already taken care of, and the whole family could head to one of the lodges in the Rockies for a couple days to ski one of the world-class ski hills:  Mt. NorquayLake Louise, or Sunshine Village. With 8,000 acres of skiable terrain between the three resorts, there is something to suit everyone, from mellow groomed runs to thrilling in-bounds challenges.

The ‘Ski and Stay’ package includes one night accommodation and one adult tri-area lift ticket per person (valid at Mt. NorquayLake Louise, or Sunshine). Complimentary transportation is included too, meaning we don’t have to deal with the hassle of getting to and from the ski hill-the whole family will be happy about that!

We would be ecstatic to find these gifts in our stockings, Santa, but I know you also like to make sure everyone has a gift to unwrap from under the tree. Never fear, I have a couple absolutely delicious ideas for ‘wrap-able’ gifts too! We’ve been trying to be healthier this year, and part of that is knowing where our food comes from. We want to make sure what we eat is local, sustainable, and free of any hormones or antibiotics. I love everything that comes from Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch, and this Christmas they have put together a marvellous gift basket full of local condiments, the cookbook ‘Simple Treasures’ featuring Rocky Mountain Cuisine, and a gift certificate for the game ranch, where we can buy super healthy and delicious bison and elk. Both are very low fat and full of protein and iron. A gift basket from Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch would look stunning under our tree.

Of course, the elk and bison will make us very thirsty, and what are the holidays without a carefully chosen bottle of our favourite wine to cheers the New Year with? Bin 905 –an impressive wine boutique in Calgary-has an amazing selection of wine, specializing in California, Italy and France, but offering unique picks from all over. Really any one of them would do the job, as I trust the staff at Bin 905 to pick out a delectable wine for me. Oh, and the kids’ dad has requested a bottle of one of the 100 varieties of single malt whiskies. Maybe just pick a few different things out and wrap them up and bring them over. Ho ho ho and all that.

Well, I think that’s everything then, Santa. It’s gotten pretty quiet in the other room where the kids are, and that always makes me nervous, so I better get in there and see what they’re up to. We promise to put out some homemade cookies for you, and carrots for the reindeer. Be sure to take my suggestions seriously, and shop early, okay? It’s always so busy closer to Christmas.

Just to recap: gift certificates from Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts, a ski and stay holiday at Buffalo Mountain Lodge or Deer Lodge, a gift basket from Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch, and some wine and single malt whisky from Bin 905. Yep, I think that covers it. Okay, thanks so much, and happy holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Yours Truly,
